How to Care for Kundan and Polki Jewellery

July 08, 20266 min read

Keep your precious Kundan and Polki pieces sparkling forever. Discover essential cleaning, handling, and storage tips.

The Delicate Craft of Kundan and Polki

Kundan and Polki are heritage arts originating from royal Mughal eras. Polki features raw, uncut diamonds set in gold foils, while Kundan uses refined glass stones or gemstones set within a pure gold foil frame. Because of the delicate foil backing and wax fillings used in these designs, they require special handling compared to cast metal jewellery.

Preventing Water and Moisture Damage

Water is the ultimate enemy of Kundan and Polki. Moisture can seep under the stone settings, causing the underlying metal foil to rust, darken, or lose its reflective shine. Always remove these ornaments before bathing, washing hands, or stepping out in the rain.

Storing Your Heritage Collections

  • Never store Kundan or Polki jewellery in velvet cases or plastic containers that trap humidity.
  • Wrap each piece individually in soft cotton or tissue paper.
  • Store them in airtight boxes placed in cool, dry areas away from direct sunlight.
